Marriage or cohabitation?
Monseigneur Giampaolo Dianin, bishop
Marriage gives to concrete form to our love, that is not a passing feeling, but a concrete commitment that wants to go through time and all its labours We see around us a growing allergy to marriage institutions. It does not have the characteristics of rejection of the sixties, when there was a strong protest of every institution; today, love no longer feels the need for an institution: all it takes is a strong passion, a roof over your head and the will to get involved in life as long as there is good understanding. In past decades those who chose to live together did so in order to test themselves, to seek guarantees, to experiment with concreteness. Some also did it because they did not believe in the institution, because they considered a piece of paper or a ceremony irrelevant. Today, if you ask a couple why they chose to live together, they look at you in a strange way because they don’t understand the meaning of the question and say: «That’s what we do today, everyone does that. Maybe in the future we’ll get married, but for now we don’t see or understand the need for it».
