Born in Assisi in 1182 to a successful merchant of fine fabrics, Pietro di Bernardone, who was very often absent from his family for business, Francesco was educated by his mother, Pica, from whom he learned the great value of feelings and relationships of affection. For this reason, he was not attracted by the merchant career his father offered him, but rather wanted to live according to the values of “courtly love”, which demanded absolute devotion to a lord, respect, and protection, even at the cost of the lives, of women, girls, and children, heroic commitment to justice, faith in God without shadows.
