Origin and traditions of the most loved egg

Mimmo Vita

The Easter egg in the Christian sense is a symbol of the Resurrection. The shell represents the tomb, from which comes out glorious the Risen Christ, the Conqueror of death. According to the ancient pagan custom, the egg is the symbol of fertility and the eternal return of life. Also in this case the Christian tradition has changed behaviour and customs consolidated in the history of populations. The custom of donating fresh eggs, in fact, was already widespread among Egyptians, Greeks and Phoenicians, for whom the egg was a symbol of life and used to celebrate the arrival of spring; we are talking about a tradition that is therefore fifty centuries old and that was perhaps widespread also among the Persians.
