Three “nights” that lead to the light

The Easter Triduum, the culmination of the liturgical year, accompanies us every year to deepen the authentic meaning of our being disciples of Jesus Crucified and resurrected and to re-tune our existence to the mystery of Him in order to walk authentically so that “we too might live in newness of life” (Romans 6, 4). Let’s try to fix our attention on the itinerary that the liturgy offers us, covering its “nights”. The night of Holy Thursday is marked by two scenes dramatically opposed: on one side Judas’ betrayal, on the other Jesus’ path revelation with the institution of the Eucharist and the washing of the feet. On one side Judas who betrays Jesus for thirty pieces of silver (cf. Matthew 26,15). On the other side Jesus gives himself at the Last Supper after the great sign he did for those he appointed “so that they might be with him” (Marc, 3,14). Then Jesus is arrested and “all the disciples left him and fled” (cf. Matthew 26,56). Before the cock crows Peter will Jesus deny three times... (continue)
